Jhonkensy Noel
Jhonkensy Noel Makes rare start against righty
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 9:26 AM
Noel started in right field and went 0-for-2 in Friday's 8-6 win over the Angels.
Analysis: Noel, who made his first start against a right-hander, was eventually pinch hit for by Nolan Jones, who had started the previous games against righties. Noel is 1-for-11 (.091) to start the season and has gone nine at-bats without a hit.
Emmanuel Clase
Emmanuel Clase Enters non-save situation
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 9:15 AM
Clase allowed two runs on three hits over one inning in Friday's 8-6 win over the Angels.
Analysis: Clase entered a non-save situation and was tagged for a pair of runs, including a solo home run. It's unclear why manager Stephen Vogt used his closer, other than the manager wanted to make sure the Guardians ended a three-game losing streak. Clase, who allowed just five runs over 74.1 innings in 2024, has already ceded three through four innings in 2025.
Ben Lively
Ben Lively Roughed up in loss
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 10:49 PM
Lively (0-1) took the loss against the Padres on Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters in 4.1 frames.
Analysis: Lively got off to a decent start Wednesday, striking out four of the first nine batters he faced. However, things took a turn for the worse in the third inning after four consecutive hits -- capped off by a Jackson Merrill homer -- gave San Diego a 4-0 lead that it would never relinquish. Lively is now up to a 6.75 ERA through his first two starts of the year but should have a decent chance to bounce back in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to come next week against the White Sox.
Kyle Manzardo
Kyle Manzardo Makes first start in field
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 10:17 PM
Manzardo started at first base and went 0-for-3 with an RBI in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Manzardo, who served as the DH in his first five starts, made his first start in the field. The 38-year-old Carlos Santana started the first five games at first but moved to DH for the day. Manzardo, like the rest of the Guardians' hitters during the three-game set in San Diego, had a quiet series, going 0-for-9.
Nolan Jones
Nolan Jones Logs two hits in loss
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 10:06 PM
Jones started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to San Diego.
Analysis: Jones is settling in after being acquired by the Guardians late in spring training. He had his best offensive game of the young season Wednesday after a 1-for-11 stretch with seven strikeouts over his first three outings. Jones is holding down the strong side of a platoon in right field.
Brayan Rocchio
Brayan Rocchio First day off Wednesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:54 PM
Rocchio is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in San Diego.
Analysis: Rocchio will get his first day off of the season after going 3-for-15 with three singles in his first five contests. The Guardians will roll with Gabriel Arias at shortstop and Daniel Schneemann at second base for Wednesday's series finale.
Logan Allen
Logan Allen Can't find plate in season debut
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 8:19 AM
Allen (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on seven hits and five walks over 5.1 innings as the Guardians fell 7-0 to the Padres. He struck out one.
Analysis: While the inability of Cleveland's hitters to solve Michael King and the San Diego bullpen gave Allen no margin for error, the southpaw created his own problems by getting only 55 of 89 pitches into the strike zone and generating just three swinging strikes. Allen had an impressive spring training, but the Guardians have plenty of options to replace him in the rotation if he continues to struggle. He'll look to rebound in his next scheduled start early next week, at home against the White Sox.
Brayan Rocchio
Brayan Rocchio Unable to build off spring
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 7:00 AM
Rocchio went 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch in Tuesday's 7-0 loss to San Diego.
Analysis: Rocchio, who had a promising Cactus League season, has not carried that over into the regular season. Over 50 plate appearances this spring, the shortstop had an .828 OPS, which in retrospect was influenced by a .389 BABIP. Thus far through five regular-season contests, Rocchio is 3-for-15 (.231 BABIP) with one walk and one run.
Lane Thomas
Lane Thomas Resting Tuesday
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 5:42 PM
Thomas isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres.
Analysis: After a 3-for-17 start to the season, Thomas will get a chance to regroup Tuesday while Daniel Schneemann starts in center field.
Carlos Santana
Carlos Santana Playing every day
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 8:23 AM
Santana started at first base and went 2-for-4 with a double in Monday's 7-2 loss to San Diego.
Analysis: Santana has started at first base and served as Cleveland's cleanup hitter for all four games thus far. He's hit safely in three of those four games, going 6-for-16 with two doubles, three runs scored and one RBI. The 38-year-old (turns 39 on April 8) is projected to have an everyday role for the Guardians.
Gabriel Arias
Gabriel Arias Back at second base
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 8:14 AM
Arias started at second base and went 1-for-3 and was caught stealing in Monday's 7-2 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Arias helped cover third base for the previous game-plus while Jose Ramirez dealt with a wrist injury. Ramirez returned to the lineup Monday, and Arias was back at second base, which he'll continue to share with Daniel Schneemann.
Kyle Manzardo
Kyle Manzardo Receives day off Monday
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 5:45 PM
Manzardo is absent from the lineup for Monday's game in San Diego.
Analysis: The left-handed hitting Manzardo started each of the first three contests of the season, including one versus a southpaw, but he'll get a day off Monday against lefty Kyle Hart. Johnathan Rodriguez is getting a start at designated hitter as Manzardo rests.
Bo Naylor
Bo Naylor Resting against southpaw
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 5:43 PM
Naylor is not in the Guardians' starting lineup against the Padres on Monday.
Analysis: Austin Hedges will start behind home plate Monday and bat ninth against San Diego left-hander Kyle Hart. Naylor has gone 2-for-12 with one RBI and three strikeouts across his first three outings of the 2025 season.
Jose Ramirez
Jose Ramirez Back after one-game absence
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 5:41 PM
Ramirez (wrist) will start at third base and bat second in Monday's game against the Padres.
Analysis: Ramirez suffered a sprained right wrist on a stolen-base attempt during Saturday's game against the Royals and didn't play Sunday. However, he's been cleared to return to action after just a one-day absence.
Daniel Schneemann
Daniel Schneemann Idle vs. southpaw
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 5:41 PM
Schneemann is not in the Guardians' lineup against the Padres on Monday.
Analysis: The lefty-hitting Schneemann will begin Monday's game in the dugout due to the Padres sending southpaw Kyle Hart to the mound. Gabriel Arias will start at the keystone and bat seventh.
Lane Thomas
Lane Thomas Moves to second in order
Sun, Mar 30, 2025, 10:37 PM
Thomas batted second and went 1-for-4 with a walk in Sunday's 6-2 win over the Royals.
Analysis: Thomas was moved to second in the order with Jose Ramirez (wrist) sitting out. Imaging on Ramirez's wrist came back negative, and he could return Monday against the Padres. When all hands are healthy, The righty-hitting Thomas bats sixth against righties and third against lefties.
Daniel Schneemann
Daniel Schneemann Pops home run in win
Sun, Mar 30, 2025, 10:31 PM
Schneemann went 1-for-1 with three walks, a solo home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 6-2 win over Kansas City.
Analysis: Schneemann was in the lineup for a second straight game and cracked his first home run. He's currently sharing second base with Gabriel Arias, who was needed at third base for the injured Jose Ramirez (wrist).
Gabriel Arias
Gabriel Arias Homers in win
Sun, Mar 30, 2025, 10:26 PM
Arias started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's 6-2 win over the Royals.
Analysis: Arias filled in for the injured Jose Ramirez (wrist) and poked his first home run of the season. Imaging on Ramirez's wrist came back negative, per Tim Stebbins of MLB.com, and manager Stephen Vogt said the third baseman could return to action Monday. Once Ramirez is ready, Arias will shift over to second base, a position he shares with Daniel Schneemann.
Kyle Manzardo
Kyle Manzardo Pops second home run
Sun, Mar 30, 2025, 9:05 PM
Manzardo went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in Sunday's win over Kansas City.
Analysis: Manzardo ripped a two-run blast off of Sam Long in the fifth inning, which proved to be the game-winning hit. Manzardo enjoyed an impressive opening series, going 5-for-11 with a pair of long balls and six RBI. He posted a .999 OPS this spring and is already paying dividends to those who bought in on the offseason breakout hype.
Tanner Bibee
Tanner Bibee Picks up first win
Sun, Mar 30, 2025, 8:53 PM
Bibee (1-0) allowed two hits and two walks over 5.2 shutout innings Sunday, striking out two and earning a win over the Royals.
Analysis: Bibee was in line to be Cleveland's Opening Day starter, but an illness pushed his start back a few days. He coughed up a couple of extra-base knocks Sunday but was able to skate around danger in the scoreless performance. While the two punchouts and nine whiffs are a bit disappointing, the 26-year-old righty picked up where he left off last year after posting a 3.47 ERA across 173.2 frames. Bibee is lined up for a road matchup against the Angels next weekend.
